The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced new rules about artificial intelligence and the Oscars. The Academy controls America's most prestigious film awards.
On Friday, the organization updated its eligibility requirements. The new rules state that only acting "demonstrably performed by humans" and writing that is "human-authored" can be nominated for Oscars. The Academy called this a "substantive" change to their award rules.
Why is this necessary now? AI technology is growing rapidly in the film industry. Some examples include recreating deceased actors with AI and creating entirely fake AI actors. Two years ago, Hollywood writers went on strike partly because studios wanted to use AI to write scripts.
However, the Academy did not ban AI completely. Filmmakers can still use AI tools in other parts of movie production. The Academy will judge each achievement by looking at how much human creativity was involved. If questions arise, they can request more information about AI use and human authorship.
