China will ban the sale of drones in Beijing under new rules starting Friday. Drones and key components cannot be sold, rented, or brought into the capital. Drone owners must register their devices with police.
China has gradually tightened drone regulations in recent years, citing public safety concerns. However, drones are part of China's low-altitude economy, a strategic priority expected to generate over 290 billion dollars by 2035.
In many Chinese cities, drones are commonly used for food delivery, agriculture, and building maintenance. But Beijing is becoming one of the hardest places to fly drones. All outdoor flights require prior approval, and users must complete online training and pass a test.
The restrictions will significantly impact China's massive drone market, which has over three million registered drones. DJI, the world's largest drone maker, has shops in Beijing that are reportedly removing drones from their shelves.
