North Korea has revived its Pyongyang International Marathon after a six-year hiatus, welcoming approximately 200 foreign runners to its capital city. This event, which began in 1981, traditionally celebrates the birth of North Korea's founding leader, Kim Il Sung.
The marathon route took participants past significant landmarks in Pyongyang, including the Kim Il Sung stadium and the Arch of Triumph. Spectators filled the stadium, enthusiastically cheering for the runners with gold-colored paper flags.
This marathon marks a gradual reopening of North Korea to international visitors following strict COVID-19 restrictions. Runners had to enter the country as part of organized tour groups, with some agencies offering six-day marathon packages. While this event signals a step towards normalcy, North Korea continues to carefully manage its international engagement.
