A new report from the think-tank Ember reveals that clean energy sources generated over 40% of the world's electricity in 2024. This marks a significant milestone in the global transition to sustainable power.
Solar power has emerged as the fastest-growing energy source, with its electricity generation doubling in just three years. China is leading this solar revolution, accounting for more than half of the global increase. India has also made impressive progress, doubling its solar capacity between 2023 and 2024.
Despite these positive developments, the report highlights a concerning trend. Global demand for electricity continues to rise, outpacing the growth of renewable energy. This has led to an increase in fossil fuel use and record-high carbon dioxide emissions. The challenge now is to accelerate clean energy adoption to meet growing energy needs while reducing environmental impact.
