Spain's Pork Industry Faces Swine Fever Challenge

Spain's 25 billion pork industry, Europe's largest, is grappling with a devastating African Swine Fever (ASF) outbreak that emerged in late November when an infected wild boar carcass was discovered in Collserola Park near Barcelona. The highly contagious virus, lethal to pigs and wild boars but harmless to humans, has triggered widespread export restrictions and caused significant economic damage.
Pig farmer Jordi Saltiveri, who oversees 8,000 pigs in Catalonia, expressed feelings of sadness and impotence upon learning of the outbreak. The crisis has resulted in each pig losing approximately 30 to 40 in market value. While some nations like Brazil, Japan, and the United States have implemented complete import bans, others including EU members, China, and the UK have adopted a more localized approach, restricting only pork from northeastern Spain.
Catalonia's agriculture minister, Òscar Ordeig, attributes the outbreak partly to overpopulation of wild boars, estimated at 120,000 to 180,000 in the region. Authorities are conducting an intensive culling operation using net traps, metal box traps, and silenced firearms, aiming to halve the boar population. By late March, 232 boars had tested positive. The operation involves extreme biosecurity measures, including vehicle and footwear disinfection and movement restrictions enforced by fencing.
The Spanish pork industry has already sustained losses exceeding 600 million, with Catalonia's pork exports declining 17% in January compared to the previous year. Industry observers are looking anxiously at Germany, where ASF contributed to a 25% production drop, while hoping to emulate Belgium's success in eliminating the disease within 14 months. Despite these challenges, domestic consumption remains stable, with Spanish consumers expressing confidence in the safety measures implemented.
