Sister runs marathons for sepsis awareness

In a poignant tribute to her late sister, Maria Campanini is set to participate in the Amazing Northampton Run, marking the second anniversary of her sister Gina's untimely death from sepsis. Gina, a former graduate of the University of Northampton, succumbed to the condition at the young age of 30.

Maria, now 28, has embarked on an ambitious challenge, running a half marathon every month this year to raise funds for the UK Sepsis Trust (UKST). Her efforts have been remarkably successful, with over £58,000 raised thus far. Maria views this endeavor as not only a physical challenge but also a therapeutic process, stating, "My running challenge has been a good way to push myself, but also do something good for my body and mind as I grieve the loss of my sister."

Sepsis, a life-threatening condition, affects 245,000 people in the UK annually and claims 48,000 lives. Gina's case highlights the insidious nature of the condition; she initially presented with flu-like symptoms and was reassured by her GP that it was likely a viral infection. However, her condition rapidly deteriorated, resulting in hospitalization due to a Strep A infection that spread to her heart. Despite intensive treatment, Gina passed away six days later.

Maria's commitment to raising awareness about sepsis extends beyond this year's challenge. Following the Northampton run, she plans to complete a full marathon in Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire, on what would have been Gina's 33rd birthday on December 7th. Through her inspiring efforts, Maria keeps her sister's memory alive while contributing to the crucial work of the UK Sepsis Trust in combating this devastating condition.
