Hollywood Stars Unite to Oppose Studio Merger

More than 1,400 prominent actors, directors, and filmmakers have expressed unequivocal opposition to the proposed $111 billion merger between Paramount and Warner Bros Discovery. The open letter, signed by acclaimed talents including Emma Thompson, Ben Stiller, Javier Bardem, and Kristen Stewart, contends that the consolidation would exacerbate challenges facing an entertainment industry already battered by pandemic aftereffects, labor strikes, and technological disruption.
The signatories argue that reducing the number of major US studios from five to four would further concentrate an already consolidated media landscape, diminishing competition precisely when the industry can least afford it. They warn of cascading consequences: fewer opportunities for creators, reduced employment across the production ecosystem, elevated costs, and diminished audience choice both domestically and internationally.
Watchmen co-creator Damon Lindelof articulated the existential threat on social media, noting that mergers inevitably result in one studio backlot becoming a "ghost town." The letter concludes with an appeal to California Attorney General Rob Bonta and federal regulators to block the transaction.
Paramount Skydance, led by tech billionaire Larry Ellison's son David, has countered these concerns by pledging to maintain both studios as independent entities while increasing theatrical releases to at least 30 films annually. The company asserts that the merger will strengthen competition and provide creators with expanded avenues for their work, emphasizing the necessity of well-capitalized companies capable of sustained investment in storytelling amid industry upheaval.
