Rachel Robertson, an 18-year-old British driver, represents a new generation challenging motorsport's institutional barriers. Competing in F1 Academy, she aspires to become the first woman in half a century to qualify for Formula 1, the world's premier racing series.
Robertson's journey began at 14, racing go-karts as typically the sole female competitor. Male rivals often dismissed her as an annoyance rather than a legitimate threat. "If you lose to a few of them, they'll be like, 'That was good'. But if you win? They will not say anything," she observes.
Established in 2023, F1 Academy addresses a stark reality: women comprise merely 10% of motorsport participants, with representation peaking at 13% in karting before shrinking to 7% in higher categories. The last woman to compete in F1 was Italy's Lella Lombardi in 1976.
The academy provides crucial institutional support—funding, training, and track time—historically accessible only to men. However, drivers face intense pressure, typically having just two years to demonstrate their potential. Financial barriers remain significant, with initial racing karts costing upwards of £7,500, and women struggling to secure early sponsorship. Despite these challenges, recent champions like France's Doriane Pin have progressed to development roles with major F1 teams, suggesting the initiative may finally create a sustainable pathway for women in motorsport's highest echelons.
