A Falcon 9 Rocket Stage Hit the Moon

A discarded Falcon 9 upper stage struck the lunar surface on 5 August 2026 after spending more than a year in a long, Moon-crossing orbit. The stage had launched in January 2025 with two private lunar landers. Space-tracking experts say the geometry of its final path made the impact near Einstein Crater effectively certain, even though an image of the fresh crater has not yet been released.
The event is an accidental consequence of the mission's disposal trajectory, not a deliberately designed experiment. In relative terms, the Moon is safer than an uncontrolled re-entry over Earth: there is no population or atmosphere at the impact site, and any new crater is small on a lunar scale. That does not make the event desirable. It highlights a growing challenge as more spacecraft operate in cislunar space, where tracking and end-of-mission routes are harder to manage.
Scientists nevertheless see a research opportunity. Images from lunar orbiters could test methods for locating impacts, examine how regolith is ejected and help improve planning for future lunar missions. The most accurate conclusion is therefore two-sided: the impact was an avoidable piece of lunar litter, but its remote location limited the immediate risk and may yield useful measurements.
