The £430 million Greenlink interconnector, which employs a 125-mile cable linking County Wexford in Ireland to Freshwater West in Pembrokeshire, Wales, was redesigned to accommodate fan sentiment.
Freshwater West gained cultural significance as the filming location for the poignant death scene of Dobby, the beloved house-elf character from the Harry Potter film series. Devoted fans have established an informal memorial consisting of pebbles inscribed with messages, colloquially referred to as "Dobby's grave." When project managers initially announced that the underground cable would traverse this tribute site, the company was inundated with hundreds of objections from passionate fans.
The subsequent route modification raises intriguing questions about the relative value society places on different types of heritage.
