Rhossi, a Kemp's ridley sea turtle, is being flown from Wales to the Gulf of Mexico following an extensive rescue and rehabilitation effort. The turtle was discovered in critical condition on a beach near Rhosneigr, Anglesey, in December 2023, suffering from cold-stunning after encountering water temperatures far below those of his native habitat.
Staff at Anglesey Sea Zoo provided specialized care for over two years, during which Rhossi's weight increased dramatically from under one kilogram to 21 kilograms. The successful rehabilitation demonstrates the effectiveness of dedicated conservation efforts and the resilience of these remarkable creatures.
The approximately 5,000-mile return journey involves complex logistics. Rhossi will travel out of water, first by helicopter from Anglesey to London, then via cargo plane to Houston, Texas. Staff have meticulously planned a temperature-controlled crate and implemented protocols to prevent dehydration of his shell, skin, and eyes throughout the journey.
Kemp's ridley turtles are the world's rarest sea turtles, nesting exclusively on two beaches in Mexico and Texas. Conservationists hope that returning Rhossi to the wild will contribute to the species' survival, though they acknowledge that the release represents one careful step rather than a guarantee for the critically endangered species.
