Tomiko Itooka, recognized as the world's oldest person, has passed away at the age of 116. She died on December 29 at a care home in Ashiya, Japan.
Born on May 23, 1908, Itooka was known for her love of bananas and a yogurt-flavored Japanese drink called Calpis. She became the oldest person last year after the death of a 117-year-old woman. When informed of her status, Itooka humbly responded with a simple "Thank you."
Itooka led an active life, playing volleyball in high school and twice climbing Mount Ontake, which is over 10,000 feet tall. She managed her husband's textile factory during World War II and lived independently after his death in 1979. Itooka is survived by two children and five grandchildren.
