The World Health Organization has declared the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo a public health emergency. The outbreak in eastern Ituri province has caused around 246 suspected cases and 80 deaths.
The current strain is caused by the Bundibugyo virus, for which there are no approved drugs or vaccines. Early symptoms include fever, muscle pain, and headache, followed by vomiting, bleeding, and organ failure. The average fatality rate is around 50%.
The virus has spread beyond DR Congo's borders. Two confirmed cases have been reported in neighboring Uganda, and one case was confirmed in Kinshasa, the capital. The WHO is concerned about the high population mobility and urban location of the outbreak.
Countries bordering DR Congo are considered high risk. The WHO advises establishing emergency operation centers and enhancing surveillance to prevent further spread of the deadly disease.
