The World's Most Painful Stings

Scientists have spent years trying to find which animal has the most painful sting in the world. The answer is not simple because different stings cause different types of pain.
Justin Schmidt, an entomologist from Arizona, created a famous sting pain index. He let at least 96 species of insects sting him and ranked them from level 1 to 4. Only three species earned level 4: the bullet ant, the tarantula hawk wasp, and the warrior wasp. Schmidt described the bullet ant's sting as "pure, intense, brilliant pain" that lasts for 24 hours.
Coyote Peterson, a YouTube personality, continued Schmidt's work. He added two more insects to level 4: the Japanese giant hornet and the executioner wasp. Peterson says the executioner wasp was the worst because its venom actually destroyed his flesh, leaving a permanent scar.
But insects aren't the only painful stingers. The tiny Irukandji jellyfish causes a syndrome that includes extreme pain, vomiting, and an overwhelming sense of doom. Victims often beg doctors to end their lives because they feel certain they will die. The stonefish and box jellyfish also deliver extremely painful stings that can last for days.
