BIIRD is an all-female Irish traditional music group that has achieved remarkable success without releasing a single record. The eleven musicians first performed together in March 2024 at Trafalgar Square in London, where they played for 10,000 people. Many of them had never met before that day.
The group was created by Lisa Canny, a champion harp and banjo player from County Mayo. She wanted to change how people see women in traditional Irish music. BIIRD performs in striking costumes designed by Irish fashion designers, which is very different from the usual look of folk musicians.
Their unique style and powerful performances caught the attention of Ed Sheeran, who invited them to tour with him. They have now performed in stadiums across Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Ireland. The group is currently working on their debut album and hopes to inspire young women to pursue traditional music.
