Research has shown that certain types of music can have a calming effect on animals, particularly dogs and cats. Studies have focused on classical music, which appears to be especially effective in reducing stress and anxiety in pets.
One study observed over 150 dogs and found that more than 70% of kennel dogs and 80% of dogs in homes showed fewer signs of anxiety when listening to slow-tempo piano music. These signs included reduced pacing, trembling, and panting.
The most effective music for calming animals tends to have a slow tempo (50-60 beats per minute or less) and simple compositions with little or no percussion. This type of music has been shown to lower cortisol levels in dogs, indicating a reduction in stress.
While classical music seems to work best, other genres like reggae and soft rock can also have a soothing effect. However, not all animals respond the same way, and pet owners may need to experiment to find what works best for their pets.
