This year's World Cup kit launches show a big change in football fashion. Adidas and Nike are moving away from traditional matching sets. Instead, they're creating streetwear-inspired collections that fans can wear in everyday life.
Nike launched its home shirts with a film showing star players like Virgil van Dijk wearing kits with cargo trousers and jeans. Adidas went further, hosting a Los Angeles event where celebrities watched models style kits with flared trousers and micro-shorts. "It's a way of showing fans how to bring the kits into their own life," says Adidas football's global manager Sam Handy.
For the first time, many brands are offering cropped versions of shirts. These were inspired by fans who cut and re-sewed jerseys to get better fits. The crop tops have been described as "a more exciting product for female fans." As Handy stresses, "The future of football is women."
Football clubs are also partnering with streetwear brands. Arsenal has collaborated with London brands, while Manchester United's Stone Roses collection has been popular with fans. This trend shows how football fashion is becoming part of lifestyle culture.
