Dubai has become one of the world's most popular tourist destinations. Last year, the city welcomed 19.59 million international visitors. However, the ongoing war between the US, Israel, and Iran has severely damaged the tourism industry.
Restaurant owner Natasha Sideris has seen revenues drop by 50% to 80% across her 14 outlets. To avoid firing staff, she reduced salaries by 30% for all employees, including herself. "The current situation is brutal," she says. "I had a choice either fire 30% of my staff or cut salaries to save jobs."
The UAE has faced over 2,400 missile and drone attacks, with 11 deaths and 185 injuries reported. Although most attacks were intercepted, debris has fallen on residential areas and hotels. Dubai International Airport, the world's busiest for international passengers, has experienced thousands of flight cancellations. Hotel occupancy has dropped to just 15-20% of normal levels, forcing properties to offer deep discounts or temporarily close.
