Norway is currently constructing the world's longest and deepest undersea road tunnel, named Rogfast. This ambitious project will span 27 kilometers and reach depths of 392 meters below sea level. The tunnel aims to improve connectivity along Norway's western coast by creating a faster link between major cities like Stavanger and Bergen.
Rogfast will replace existing ferry connections, reducing travel time and making daily commuting easier. The tunnel will consist of two separate tubes, each with two traffic lanes. Interestingly, it will feature a double roundabout halfway through, connecting to the small island of Kvitsøy.
Building such a long tunnel under the sea presents significant challenges. Construction teams are working from both ends, using advanced laser technology to ensure they meet in the middle with high precision. The project also faces difficulties with water leaks and requires special ventilation systems to ensure air quality and safety for future motorists.
Despite some setbacks, Rogfast is expected to be completed by 2033, at a cost of about $2.4 billion. It's part of a larger plan to create a ferry-free highway along Norway's western coast, which could halve travel times along the route.
