AI-Designed Convention Center in Shanghai

A striking new structure has emerged on the banks of Shanghai's Huangpu River. The West Bund Convention Center, resembling a dark diamond, was partially designed using artificial intelligence (AI). This innovative approach to architecture is fitting for a building that will host major AI conferences.
The American architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) used AI to generate hundreds of design options for the building's facade. They programmed the AI with specific goals, such as maximizing natural light and optimizing views for occupants. The AI then produced numerous iterations, allowing the architects to select the most aesthetically pleasing and functional design.
While AI played a significant role in the design process, human architects still made the final decisions. They believe that AI can enhance design capabilities and save time, but it cannot replace human creativity and judgment. This project demonstrates the potential for AI to revolutionize architectural practices, while also raising questions about the future role of technology in design.
