Saturday, 26 July, 2025122 words2 minutes
The European Medicines Agency has recommended a new drug to prevent HIV infection. The drug, called lenacapavir and sold as Yeytuo, is given as an injection every six months. This makes it the longest-lasting HIV prevention medication available.
Studies have shown that lenacapavir is highly effective in stopping HIV transmission. It could be a significant tool in the fight against the spread of HIV. The drug is considered to be of major public health interest.
Once approved by the European Commission, Yeytuo will be available in all 27 EU countries, as well as Iceland, Norway, and Liechtenstein. This new option could be particularly appealing to people who find it challenging to take daily pills or visit clinics frequently for other prevention methods.
