Natural Doesn't Always Mean Better: Understanding the Appeal to Nature

Companies often advertise their products as "natural." They want us to believe natural is always better. But this idea has a problem.
Many natural things are harmful. Arsenic and asbestos are natural, but they cause serious health problems. Some plants produce cyanide, a deadly poison. Even "natural" baby products have caused seizures because they contained belladonna, a poisonous plant.
Meanwhile, synthetic products have improved our lives greatly. Modern medicine has made childbirth much safer. Vaccinations have saved millions of lives by preventing diseases like smallpox and whooping cough. We process and cook food to make it safer and more nutritious.
The word "natural" is poorly defined. It doesn't guarantee that a product is better or safer. Next time you see this claim, ask for real evidence. Don't just accept that something is good because it's called natural.
