Chinese toy company Pop Mart and Sony Pictures have announced plans for a Labubu feature film. The movie will combine live action with computer-generated animation and is currently in early development.
Paul King, known for directing Wonka and the Paddington films, will helm the project. He will also co-produce and develop the script with Steven Levenson. Labubu dolls have become a global sensation, helping Pop Mart grow into a toy-making giant worth nearly $40 billion.
Created by Hong Kong artist Kasing Lung over a decade ago, Labubu is a forest elf inspired by Nordic mythology. The character is part of Lung's book series called The Monsters. Celebrities like Rihanna and Blackpink's Lisa have been photographed wearing Labubu charms, boosting the toy's popularity.
Experts believe the film could help Pop Mart evolve from a toy retailer into an entertainment brand. The movie was announced in Paris during a global exhibition celebrating Labubu's 10th anniversary.
