A remarkable piece of Mars is about to go on sale in New York. Sotheby's auction house is offering what they claim is the largest Martian meteorite ever found on Earth. This extraordinary rock weighs 54 pounds (25 kilograms) and is expected to fetch between $2 million and $4 million.
The meteorite, known as NWA 16788, is believed to have been ejected from Mars's surface by a massive asteroid impact. It then traveled an incredible 140 million miles through space before crashing into the Sahara desert. A meteorite hunter discovered it in Niger in November 2023.
What makes this find even more special is its rarity. Out of over 77,000 officially recognized meteorites on Earth, only 400 are from Mars. This particular specimen represents nearly 7% of all Martian material currently on our planet, making it a truly unique item for collectors and scientists alike.
