Healthcare workers celebrated as Daniel Kitambala left the Ebola treatment center in Mongbwalu. After three weeks of treatment, the 49-year-old farmer had recovered from the deadly virus. "That disease is terrible," he said. "But God is great, I am well now."
More than 140 people have died from the Bundibugyo species of Ebola in Ituri province. The outbreak was declared just over a month ago, but the virus may have been spreading undetected for months. Local myths made the situation worse. Many believed the disease came from a "coffin curse" and that treatment centers caused problems rather than solved them.
Kitambala became infected after visiting a sick person in his community. At first, he tried traditional medicine, but when his condition worsened, he went to the hospital. Dr. Richard Lukodu, the hospital's medical director, said more people are now seeking treatment after seeing patients recover. "We have seen a huge difference in the community since the first patient recovered," he explained. The recoveries are helping build trust in the healthcare system.
