The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is making history on Sunday by hosting the first professional sporting event at the White House. About 4,300 guests will attend the invite-only mixed martial arts event on the South Lawn, while 85,000 more fans are expected at a nearby fan zone.
The event celebrates President Trump's 80th birthday, Flag Day, and America's 250th anniversary. Trump and his longtime friend Dana White, the UFC president, arranged the seven-bout card together. The UFC invested approximately $60 million in the event, including $700,000 for grass repairs afterward.
The centerpiece is "the Claw" - a massive 92-foot metal structure weighing 600 tonnes that towers over the octagon. Fourteen fighters will compete, with the main event featuring Ilia Topuria against Justin Gaethje starting at 8 PM EDT.
However, the event faces challenges. A lawsuit attempted to stop it, citing corruption concerns, but a judge denied the request. Additionally, hot weather and thunderstorms could disrupt the fights. A Reuters poll showed only 16% of Americans think hosting UFC at the White House is appropriate.
