Yu Hyuk's life story is one of remarkable transformation. As a child in North Korea, he struggled to survive, often begging on the streets and doing odd jobs. In 2013, at the age of 16, Hyuk made the difficult decision to leave North Korea and join his mother in South Korea.
Adjusting to life in South Korea was challenging for Hyuk. He found the education system very competitive and struggled to catch up. However, he discovered a passion for writing and music, particularly rap. His unique background and talent caught the attention of a music producer, leading to an opportunity in the K-pop industry.
Now, at 25, Hyuk is set to debut as a member of 1Verse, a K-pop boy band featuring members from diverse backgrounds. The group includes another North Korean defector, as well as members from Japan and the United States. Hyuk hopes his journey will inspire other North Korean defectors to pursue their dreams.
