Drones to Deliver Blood: A Life-Saving Trial in Wales

Wales is embarking on an innovative trial to revolutionize blood transport using drone technology. Currently, blood donations are processed in south Wales and transported by road, which can be time-consuming. The new initiative, known as the Dragon's Heart project, aims to utilize specially designed drones to deliver blood samples more efficiently.
These drones are substantial, weighing about 25kg and measuring 1.7m wide. They are equipped with a unique hatch that allows the blood to be stored within the drone's body, helping to maintain the correct temperature and minimize vibrations during transport.
The Welsh Blood Service is optimistic about this trial, set to begin in early 2026. They plan to thoroughly test the blood transported by drones to ensure its safety and quality upon arrival. If successful, this method could significantly reduce delivery times, especially to remote areas of Wales, potentially saving lives in emergency situations.
