A unique piece of history is now on display at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam - a condom that's nearly 200 years old. This rare item, dating back to around 1830, is in remarkably good condition and has never been used. Made from a sheep's appendix, it features an interesting print showing a nun and three clergymen in a suggestive scene.
The museum bought this unusual artifact at an auction last year. It's part of a larger exhibition about 19th-century sexuality and prostitution. The curator, Joyce Zelen, says the response from visitors has been amazing. People of all ages are coming to see this piece of history.
Experts believe this condom was a luxury item, probably sold in an upscale French brothel. It gives us insight into the sexual health concerns of the past, when people feared unwanted pregnancies and diseases like syphilis. The museum will display this unique item until the end of November, offering a glimpse into the past's approach to love and health.
