Garbage Cafes: Trading Plastic for Food

Saturday, 30 August, 2025144 words2 minutes
In India, some cities have a new kind of cafe. These cafes are called 'Garbage Cafes'. They help solve two big problems: plastic waste and hunger.
At these cafes, people can bring plastic trash. They give the plastic to the cafe. In return, they get free food. For example, in one city called Ambikapur, if you bring 1 kilogram of plastic, you get a full meal. The meal has rice, vegetables, and bread.
Many poor people like this idea. They can now get food by collecting plastic from the streets. This helps them and also keeps the city clean. The plastic collected at the cafe is then recycled.
The Garbage Cafe in Ambikapur feeds more than 20 people every day. It has collected a lot of plastic since it opened in 2019. This has helped reduce the amount of plastic waste in the city.
