Four mathematicians won the 2026 Fields Medal. They are Yu Deng, John Pardon, Jacob Tsimerman, and Hong Wang. This medal is given to great mathematicians every four years.
Hong Wang and Yu Deng are from China. They are the first Chinese mathematicians to win this award. Wang is 35 years old. She works at New York University and at a research center in France. She is the third woman to win the Fields Medal.
Wang studies how shapes and lines work in mathematics. She worked on a problem from 1917. The problem asks: how much space does a line need to point in all directions? Wang and another mathematician helped solve this problem. The awards were given in Philadelphia on July 23, 2026.
