A new round of direct negotiations between the United States and Iran has been postponed after Vice-President JD Vance delayed his planned trip to Switzerland. The White House announced late Thursday that Vance would not be travelling to the talks, citing that the logistics had not been "simple or predictable." This development comes merely a day after the US dropped its naval blockade of Iran following the signing of a bilateral deal aimed at de-escalating regional tensions.
Despite the agreement stipulating that hostilities should cease in Lebanon, the country's health ministry reported that Israeli strikes had killed at least 47 people overnight and into Friday. Israel's military defended the action, stating it had targeted infrastructure and individuals linked to the Iran-backed group Hezbollah. Hours before the White House statement, Hezbollah-linked Lebanese media reported that the talks had been suspended due to ongoing Israeli air strikes.
On Friday, a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah was agreed, taking effect at 4 PM local time. The postponed negotiations were expected to focus on implementing the Memorandum of Understanding and initiating discussions on longer-term issues, including Iran's nuclear programme. The 14-point deal includes reopening the Strait of Hormuz, ensuring Iran never acquires nuclear weapons, and a $300 billion reconstruction plan for Iran. Iran's Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei acknowledged approving the deal despite having reservations, while President Trump responded assertively, claiming Iran met "out of desperation."
