Elon Musk's SpaceX successfully launched the most powerful rocket ever constructed on Friday evening, marking a significant milestone ahead of the company's anticipated record-breaking stock market debut. The uncrewed Starship V3 rocket, standing 124 meters tall, lifted off from Texas at 17:30 local time after a 24-hour delay caused by a launch-tower malfunction.
During its approximately one-hour mission, the spacecraft deployed 20 dummy satellites before executing a controlled re-entry and splashdown in the Indian Ocean, where it exploded as intended. This was the 12th test flight of the Starship program, and while both rocket stages experienced engine failures, the mission largely accomplished its primary objectives.
The successful test has bolstered confidence among investors and NASA, which intends to utilize the Starship vehicle for future lunar missions. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman praised the achievement, stating it brings humanity "one step closer to the Moon... one step closer to Mars."
The timing is particularly significant as SpaceX prepares for what could be Wall Street's largest initial public offering, potentially beginning next month. With a self-valuation of $1.25 trillion, the listing could make Musk the world's first trillionaire. Beyond rocket manufacturing, SpaceX operates the Starlink satellite internet service and owns the artificial intelligence firm xAI.
