Brighton & Hove City Council (BHCC) has reported remarkable success in its sustainable energy initiative, with solar panels installed on five leisure centers generating a cumulative one million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy. This substantial output is equivalent to powering 370 homes or charging 500 electric vehicles for an entire year, marking a significant stride in the city's commitment to renewable energy sources.
Withdean Leisure Centre emerged as the standout performer, single-handedly producing over half of the total energy generated - more than 500,000 kWh. The remaining energy was collectively produced by Moulsecoomb Leisure Centre, Portslade Sports Centre, Prince Regent Sports Complex, and Stanley Deason Leisure Centre, each contributing to this impressive renewable energy milestone.
The initiative serves multiple purposes beyond mere energy production. It plays a crucial role in reducing the operational costs of these facilities while simultaneously diminishing their carbon footprint. A prime example is the Prince Regent Sports Complex, where an astounding 97% of the solar energy generated is consumed on-site, dramatically reducing the facility's dependence on grid electricity.
Matt Wickham, chief operating officer at Freedom Leisure, the not-for-profit trust operating these facilities, emphasized the multifaceted benefits of this initiative. He stated, "These solar panels are cutting costs, lowering emissions and making our centres more sustainable for the future." Furthermore, any surplus electricity generated is fed back into the grid, providing an additional revenue stream to offset operational costs, thereby enhancing the economic viability of these leisure centers.
