Seed Bank in England: 25 Years of Preserving Plant Diversity

The Millennium Seed Bank, an underground vault nestled in the Sussex countryside of southern England, is commemorating its 25th anniversary as a bastion of global plant biodiversity. This facility, operated by the Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, houses an astounding 2.5 billion wild plant seeds representing approximately 40,000 species. These seeds are meticulously preserved in sealed containers at minus 20 degrees Celsius, creating a secure archive of the world's flora intended to safeguard against extinction.

The preservation process is a testament to scientific precision. Field collectors from diverse locations worldwide gather seeds and dispatch them to Kew. Since its inception, the Millennium Seed Bank has evolved into a global collaborative effort, partnering with 279 organizations across more than 100 countries. Furthermore, Kew has trained over 3,000 scientists from 70 countries in seed conservation techniques, fostering a global network of expertise.
