In a strategic move that addresses recent controversy, Italian luxury powerhouse Prada has unveiled plans for a limited-edition line of footwear inspired by India's iconic Kolhapuri sandals. This initiative comes in the wake of allegations of cultural appropriation that surfaced when Prada showcased sandals bearing a striking resemblance to the traditional Indian footwear without acknowledging its origins.
The new venture, dubbed 'Prada Made in India – Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals', will see the production of 2,000 pairs of sandals in Maharashtra and Karnataka, the heartlands of Kolhapuri craftsmanship. Prada has forged partnerships with state-backed entities to facilitate this collaboration, aiming to meld traditional manufacturing techniques with Prada's luxury standards.
Set to debut in February 2026, these sandals will retail at a premium price point of $939, available both online and in 40 select Prada boutiques globally. The initiative extends beyond mere production, encompassing a comprehensive skill development program. Approximately 200 Indian artisans will undergo an intensive three-year training regimen in Italy, focusing on luxury shoemaking techniques.
This collaboration not only serves as a response to the earlier controversy but also represents a significant step towards recognizing and elevating traditional craftsmanship within the luxury fashion sphere. It underscores a growing trend in the industry towards cultural sensitivity and sustainable, localized production practices.
