Octopus Takes Underwater Selfie

In an extraordinary display of curiosity and intelligence, a giant Pacific octopus off the coast of Vancouver Island recently astonished two underwater videographers by commandeering their camera equipment. John Roney and Chris Mullen, experienced ocean documentarians, were conducting a dive in an area renowned for its octopus population when they encountered this remarkable cephalopod.

Initially, the octopus exhibited typical exploratory behavior, investigating the divers with its prehensile arms. However, the creature's interest soon shifted to the camera equipment. In a move that left the divers astounded, the octopus deliberately reached out and enveloped one of the cameras entirely within its arms, effectively seizing control of the device.

Roney, demonstrating remarkable presence of mind, relinquished the camera to the octopus. This decision led to an unprecedented 'personal photoshoot' by the eight-armed photographer. The octopus maneuvered the camera with surprising dexterity, capturing unique footage from within its own arms - a perspective rarely, if ever, seen before in underwater photography.

Perhaps most astonishingly, after several minutes of impromptu filming, the octopus demonstrated an unexpected level of technological comprehension by successfully powering off the camera. This action further underscored the creature's renowned intelligence and adaptability.

Both Roney and Mullen were elated by this unanticipated interaction. Mullen described it as 'the coolest thing to see', while Roney, impressed by the quality of the footage, humorously awarded the octopus a perfect score for its underwater videography skills.
