In a landmark achievement for distance running, Kenya's Sabastian Sawe became the first athlete to officially break the two-hour marathon barrier, winning the London Marathon in a world record time of 1:59:30. The defending champion's performance eclipsed the previous record set by the late Kelvin Kiptum by 65 seconds and surpassed Eliud Kipchoge's 1:59:41 exhibition run from 2019, which was not ratified due to non-standard pacing protocols and specialized conditions.
The race unfolded with tactical precision from the outset. A lead group of six elite runners maintained an ambitious yet controlled pace, reaching the halfway point in 1:00:29. The decisive phase came between 30km and 35km, where Sawe and Ethiopia's Yomif Kejelcha pulled clear with a blistering 13:54 split. Sawe, wearing Adidas's Pro Evo 3 supershoe weighing less than 100 grams, made his final surge with one mile remaining, ultimately crossing the line alone. Kejelcha finished second in 1:59:41, recording both an Ethiopian record and the fastest marathon debut in history, while Uganda's Jacob Kiplimo secured third in 2:00:28.
The women's race proved equally spectacular, with Ethiopia's Tigst Assefa successfully defending her title while improving her own women-only world record to 2:15:41. In a thrilling three-way battle, Assefa gradually edged clear of Kenya's Hellen Obiri and Joyciline Jepkosgei in the closing stages. The race marked the first time three women finished inside 2:16 in the same competition, with Obiri clocking a personal best of 2:15:53 and Jepkosgei finishing in 2:15:55.
