Walt Disney Company has revealed its ambitious plans to establish its first theme park in the Middle East, marking a significant milestone in the company's global expansion strategy. The new resort, set to be located on Abu Dhabi's Yas Island in the United Arab Emirates, represents a collaborative effort between Disney and Miral, a local leisure and entertainment company.
This venture will be Disney's seventh theme park resort worldwide, following its existing locations across North America, Europe, and Asia. The choice of Abu Dhabi as the site for this new development is strategic, capitalizing on the UAE's position as a major global transit hub. Disney highlighted that the location is within a four-hour flight radius of approximately one-third of the world's population, presenting immense potential for tourism growth.
Robert Iger, Disney's chief executive, described the project as a 'thrilling' moment for the company. He emphasized that Disneyland Abu Dhabi would offer an experience that is 'authentically Disney and distinctly Emirati', suggesting a unique blend of Disney's renowned entertainment offerings with local cultural elements.
The development is expected to significantly boost Abu Dhabi's tourism sector and contribute to the emirate's economic diversification efforts. Mohamed Abdalla Al Zaabi, Miral's CEO, stated that the Disney park would be a crucial factor in advancing Yas Island's position as a global destination for exceptional entertainment and leisure.
This announcement comes at a time when Disney is reporting strong financial performance, with revenue up by 7% to $23.6 billion in the first quarter of 2025. The company's theme park division has shown resilience and growth, with increased attendance and spending at US parks, as well as a rise in cruise ship bookings.
