Coping with Peak Cypress and Willow Pollen Across Cities

As spring unfolds across Chinese cities, the annual pollen season brings more than just blooming trees and warmer weather. For a significant portion of urban residents, it marks the onset of allergic symptoms—sneezing, itchy eyes, and nasal congestiontriggered primarily by cypress and willow pollen. According to the China Meteorological Administration, cypress pollen has dominated since March, with willow pollen spreading across North China.
Unlike visible air pollution, pollen operates as an almost invisible seasonal health concern. Zhao Xiyao, a postgraduate student in Beijing, describes the experience: "In the morning and evening, it feels like there's a fine layer of dust in the air. As soon as I step outside, I start sneezing." Her coping strategy—temporary relief through eye drops and nasal spray—reflects a common "endure and wait" mentality among sufferers.
Medical experts explain that allergic reactions represent an excessive immune response to typically harmless substances. Young and middle-aged adults face heightened vulnerability due to more reactive immune systems and greater outdoor exposure. Luo Chaofan, a rehabilitation therapist, emphasizes that sustainable coping mechanisms—including adequate sleep, balanced nutrition, and regular exercise—prove more effective than temporary fixes.
Meanwhile, urban governance is evolving to incorporate pollen management. Beijing has introduced a pollen fixation agent that accelerates particle settling with 17 to 20 times greater efficiency than conventional water spraying, requiring application only once daily or every two days. Long-term strategies include replacing high-allergen male cypress trees with female varieties that produce no airborne pollen, thereby maintaining aesthetic greenery while reducing public health risks. These initiatives signal a shift from individual adaptation toward systematic environmental intervention.
