Hong Wang and Yu Deng achieved a historic milestone as the first Chinese mathematicians to receive the Fields Medal. Wang, aged 35, holds appointments at New York University and the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques in France, and became only the third woman to receive this distinction since the medal's inception.
Wang was honored for her groundbreaking work in harmonic analysis and geometric measure theory, particularly for major advances on the Kakeya problem in three dimensions. Collaborating with Joshua Zahl, she helped resolve a long-standing version of this problem, originally posed by Japanese mathematician Soichi Kakeya in 1917. The problem fundamentally examines the minimal space required for a line segment to point in every direction. Yu Deng, a professor at the University of Chicago, joined Wang as a medalist, alongside John Pardon of Stony Brook University and Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto. The awards were announced at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Philadelphia on July 23, 2026. The Fields Medal maintains strict eligibility criteria, requiring recipients to be under 40 years of age on January 1 of the award year.
