China Bans Drone Sales in Beijing

China will prohibit the sale of drones in Beijing under stringent new regulations taking effect Friday. Drones and essential components will be banned from being sold, rented, or transported into the Chinese capital, while drone owners face mandatory registration requirements with law enforcement.
China has progressively tightened drone regulations in recent years, with authorities citing public safety concerns. This creates a paradox, as drones and flying taxis constitute a crucial element of the low-altitude economy, a strategic priority projected to generate over two trillion yuan by 2035.
Despite Chinese companies dominating the global drone market, the country is becoming one of the most restrictive environments for drone operation. All outdoor flights in Beijing require prior authorization, and operators must complete online training and demonstrate regulatory competency through testing. Exceptions exist for counter-terrorism and disaster relief purposes, subject to official approval.
The sweeping restrictions are poised to significantly disrupt China's substantial drone market, which encompasses over three million registered devices. Major manufacturers like DJI, the world's largest drone producer, are reportedly removing inventory from Beijing retail locations in anticipation of the new regulations.
