Researchers at the University of Cambridge have developed a groundbreaking vaccine using artificial intelligence. This is the first time a vaccine's key component has been entirely designed by AI and tested in human trials.
The vaccine targets all coronaviruses, including current COVID variants and viruses that exist in animals but could potentially cause future pandemics. Unlike traditional vaccines that focus on one specific virus strain, this AI-designed vaccine uses a "super-antigen" that trains the immune system to recognize and fight an entire family of viruses.
The AI analyzed genetic codes from various coronaviruses collected through surveillance programs. It then created an antigen that could provide broad protection, even against mutated versions or new infections jumping from animals to humans. Initial trials with 39 people showed the vaccine is safe, though immune responses were modest.
The Cambridge team is already developing similar vaccines for seasonal flu, H5N1 bird flu, and viral hemorrhagic fevers including Ebola. Experts believe this technology represents a fundamental shift in pandemic preparation.
