World Bee Day: Raising Awareness for Bees

World Bee Day, celebrated on May 20, aims to raise awareness about the crucial role of bees in our ecosystem. Bees, along with other pollinators, have been declining in numbers for years due to various factors including insecticides, parasites, diseases, climate change, and lack of diverse food sources.
The importance of bees cannot be overstated. A significant portion of human diet relies on plants pollinated by bees, including not just honeybees but also hundreds of wild bee species. In Germany alone, bees contribute about 2 billion euros to the economy, particularly in pollinating the iconic yellow rapeseed fields.
To help protect bees, people are encouraged to take small steps such as planting pollinator gardens or purchasing raw honey from local beekeepers. In urban areas, some enthusiasts even keep bees in rooftop hives. However, experts stress the need to protect both honeybees and wild bee species, as all play vital roles in maintaining biodiversity and supporting our food systems.
