Ubisoft, the renowned French video game developer and publisher, has announced a significant restructuring of its operations. The company has made the decision to cancel six video games, including the highly anticipated remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. This move has surprised many fans, especially given the current trend of successful game remakes in the industry.
In addition to the game cancellations, Ubisoft has closed two of its studios located in Stockholm, Sweden and Halifax, Canada. The company's CEO, Yves Guillemot, stated that these changes are necessary to create conditions for sustainable growth in the long term.
Ubisoft will now focus its efforts on developing open-world adventure games and live service games, which offer ongoing content and regular player engagement. The company aims to transform popular franchises like Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and Rainbow Six into annual billion-dollar brands.
These strategic changes come as Ubisoft faces challenges in the competitive triple-A game market, where development costs are rising and creating new successful brands is becoming increasingly difficult.
