Donald Trump is set to become the first sitting US president to have his signature appear on US banknotes, according to a recent announcement by the Treasury Department. This unprecedented move will mark America's 250th anniversary celebration.
Trump's signature will be printed alongside Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's signature on dollar bills. The first $100 bills featuring these signatures will be printed in June, with other denominations to follow. Treasury Secretary Bessent stated that there is "no more powerful way" to recognize the country's achievements and President Trump than having his name on US currency.
Traditionally, US banknotes have carried the signatures of treasury officials since 1861, not the president. This change breaks with long-standing tradition. While supporters view it as a fitting tribute, critics like California Governor Gavin Newsom have criticized the decision, suggesting Americans will know "who to blame" for economic challenges.
This isn't the first time Trump's name has appeared on government materials. During his first term, his name was printed on pandemic relief checks sent to millions of Americans.
