President Donald Trump announced on Monday that he wants to postpone his planned visit to China by approximately one month. The meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping was originally scheduled for late March, but Trump cited the ongoing Iran conflict as the reason for the delay.
"We've requested that we delay it a month or so," Trump told reporters at the White House. He emphasized that it was crucial for him to remain available to oversee the war effort. "I think it's important that I be here," he added.
Despite the postponement, Trump stressed that his relationship with Xi remains positive. "I'm looking forward to being with him. We have a very good relationship," he said. The two leaders last met face-to-face in October.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed that the delay was solely due to Trump's desire to coordinate the war effort from Washington, not because of trade disagreements or other diplomatic issues.
