Two 19-year-old Belgian teenagers were arrested in Kenya with 5,000 ants in their possession. They were given a choice between paying a $7,700 fine or serving a 12-month prison sentence. The teens claimed they were collecting the ants as a hobby, but the court ruled that the large number of ants and their specific valuable species indicated more serious intentions.
Authorities believe the ants were destined for European and Asian markets, highlighting a new trend in wildlife trafficking. The particular ant species, messor cephalotes, is native to East Africa and is in high demand.
Experts warn that removing ants from their natural habitats can disrupt ecosystems. Ants play crucial roles in soil aeration, enhancing fertility, and seed dispersal. Their removal could lead to ecological imbalances in both their original and new environments.
