The New York Knicks won their first NBA championship in more than 50 years on Saturday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90. Thousands of New Yorkers flooded the streets to celebrate this historic moment for their city.
However, the celebrations quickly turned violent in parts of Manhattan. A 17-year-old was shot in the foot near Times Square around 2:00 AM. Five school buses, which had been transporting World Cup fans, were set on fire or destroyed. People climbed on top of the buses, jumped on them, and attacked them with bats.
Police cars were also targeted, with people smashing windshields and damaging vehicles. The NYPD reported four stabbings, multiple fights, and people lighting fireworks in crowded areas. Ten police officers were injured, including one who was punched in the face and another hit with a glass bottle.
The police arrested 63 people on various charges including assault, weapon possession, and disorderly conduct. Despite the Knicks owner's plea for people to celebrate safely, the night ended in chaos.
