A team of divers has made an exciting discovery off Florida's 'Treasure Coast'. They found over 1,000 gold and silver coins from a Spanish shipwreck, estimated to be worth $1 million. These coins are believed to have been minted in Spanish colonies in Bolivia, Mexico, and Peru.
The treasure comes from a fleet of Spanish ships that sank during a hurricane on July 31, 1715. These ships were carrying valuable items from the New World back to Spain when disaster struck. Over the years, many treasures from this fleet have been found in the coastal area between Melbourne and Fort Pierce.
The salvage company, 1715 Fleet – Queens Jewels LLC, announced this discovery. They use special equipment and techniques to search the sea floor. Some of the coins still show dates and mint marks, which is valuable for historians and collectors.
Under Florida law, a portion of the found artifacts must be given to the state for research and public display. The rest is divided between the salvage company and its workers. This discovery not only has monetary value but also provides a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Spanish Empire.
